Week Six – Design Drivers

Here is my ameliorated list of Design Drivers. Once again this list is subject to change:

Stakeholders

People with no gardens

People with no access to allotments

People whom the current methods do not suit

People who require assistance when engaging in GYO activities

People with a limited range of movement

Knowledge

The product shall remove uncertainty from the GYO process and give the user confidence

The user shall have access to knowledge about GYO and how to grow plants correctly

It would be desirable if the user had knowledge of seasonal growing

If soil based methods are implemented, the user shall have access to knowledge of different soils and nutrients

If hydroponic based methods are implemented, the user shall have access to knowledge of different nutrients

The user needs to know what to do and when to do it

Features

The user needs to be able to grow vegetables with little difficulty

It would be desirable if the product could be somewhat self-sustaining

The user shall be able to determine the location and name of each plant

The product shall be visually appealing

The product shall be protected from pests and animals

The product shall reduce the risk of disease

The product needs to be manufactured from sturdy materials

The product needs to allow plants access to everything they need to grow

It would be desirable if the product was self contained

Time Constraints

The product must address watering issues

The user wants short setup times

It would be desirable if the product was easy to clean

The user needs to be able to operate the product on their own

The user wants to be able to grow different edible plants at the same time

Fulfilment of User

The product shall give the user hands on experience

The user needs to be able to fulfil their personal reason for wanting to GYO

It would be desirable if the product would maintain an element of community spirit

The product needs to be able to grow kitchen garden plants with a high success rate

Space constraints

The product must address size issues

It would be desirable if the product was expandable

The produce should make efficient use of space

The product should not take from the environment in which it is placed

The user would like the product to be used in any room if it is to be located indoors

The user wants to product to house the plants from beginning to end

Interest and Involvement

The product should allow people to maintain an interest in the product

It would be desirable if the product would keep people interested in GYO

The product must reduce stress and frustration associated with gardening

The user would like to be included in the process

 Accessibility

The user shall not be required to over extend to operate the product

It would be desirable if the product was easily collapsible, storable and transportable

Cultivation Methods

The product must use either organic soil based cultivation methods or hydroponics.

Miscellaneous

The product should be easy to use by both adults and children
