Week Six – Emerging Design Drivers (Rough List)

The following is a rough list of soon to be Design Drivers that I feel are becoming more apparent. Common themes have emerged throughout the creation of this list, so each design driver is listen under its relevant theme. This list is not final:

  • Easy to access information
  • Requires minimal reading and research
  • General Knowhow about cultivation
  • Access to knowledge and “How to’s”
  • Knowledge on how to grow things correctly
  • Knowledge of specific nutrients
  • Knowledge of when to do certain things
  • Soil issue remedies


  • Self-watering mechanisms
  • Somewhat automated
  • Labelled growing areas
  • Efficient light source
  • Temperature Maintenance
  • Protection from weathering effects
  • Shatterproof
  • Should not cause a mess or be untidy
  • Reduce/eliminate pests
  • Take seasons away from cultivation
  • Reduce bad plant aromas
  • Pollination Support
  • Ability to Store peripherals associated with the product
  • No gaps for pests to invade
  • Reduce or prevent disease
  • Reduce or prevent the spreading of disease
  • Ward away wildlife
  • Reduce vandalism

Time Constraints

  • Short set up times
  • Short maintenance times
  • Easy to clean
  • Easy to operate by one person
  • Low maintenance
  • Requires no long term commitments
  • Reduce Difficulties
  • Reduce weeds and unwanted growth
  • Doesn’t require daily attention
  • Grow different things at the same time

Fulfilment of User

  • Give the user a sense of achievement
  • Beneficial to the user
  • Cheap product or good returns
  • Fulfils a personal need
  • Community Spirit
  • Make people feel good

Space Constraints

  • Fits in a confined space
  • Suitable for confined spaces
  • Efficient shape
  • Attractive
  • Not take from the environment in which it is placed
  • Can be used indoors in any room
  • Does not require re-potting
  • Portable
  • Expandable

Interest and Involvement

  • Maintain interest in the product
  • Keep people interested in GYO
  • Reduced stress and frustration associated with gardening
  • The more time put in, the better the returns
  • Can be time consuming if people prefer it to be
  • Doesn’t overload the user with too much of one thing
  • Should include the person in the process


  • Easy to gain access to
  • Does not require one to over extend to operate it
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Easily transportable
  • Easily collapsible and storable
